A lot of chronic pain is caused by poor postural and movement habits. This is the pain that you feel.
Unless they are addressed, these habits create long term patterns of surplus tension in the body which can lead to acute, debilitating pain.
It's like continuously bashing your head against a brick wall! No matter how many times you apply the ice-pack, the pain will win in the end because you keep doing it!

Over my many years of teaching the Alexander Technique, I’ve come across the condition known as ‘Dowager’s Hump many times. This seems to be more prevalent in women possibly mostly due to the female form being more susceptible. In later years this dowager’s hump can be exacerbated by vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis. The condition is not only deemed to be unflattering but can also be the cause of pain, discomfort and disease in later life.
The Alexander Technique is a unique self-help method of facilitating health through good habitual use of the body. We human beings with our bigger brains can develop more conscious choice of how to use our skeletons in an optimum way radically improving the quality of our lives. The problem is that we can remain unaware of this capability allowing conditions to deteriorate without proper means of alleviating them. The creatures we share the planet with, don’t have that choice built-in like we do.
If you can start to perceive that increasing curve at the top of your back, the good news is that you can learn to arrest the pattern and start to feel and look better. The brain weighs about 3 pounds. Then there is the skull, the eyes, the teeth, the facial muscles and skin. In all, an adult head weighs around 10 to 11 pounds (4.5 to 5 kg) or 4 to 5 bags of sugar, Stop for a moment and consider that if you’re not carrying that weight about in an efficient natural way, your spine is going to feel the pressure and you’re going to develop exaggerated curves in your back.
Even if there is a genetic link to your emerging hump, the Alexander Technique still apples. Remedial exercises tend to be ineffective as they can be tiresome and are not actually getting to the root of the problem which is how you are carrying your head around day in, day out. Just a few lessons in the technique to re-educate your body can make a massive difference to your life.
Osteoporosis is a metabolism-related skeletal disease that is also known as “bone loss”. … In osteoporosis, the bones lose density and stability. Fractures are particularly common in the femur and spine. Learning the Alexander Technique now can help reduce that possibility.
Richard Marsden
“I’d been hoping for some time that an Alexander Technique teacher would come to Barrow and, luckily for me, Richard did. I badly needed help with my core balance to overcome my tendency to trip and fall badly. Currently, I am in the process of being re-educated in the seemingly basic skills of walking, bending,… Continue Reading
“I have found my sessions with Richard to be very positive. My initial concern centred around my posture and being round shouldered – always feeling like I looked downwards when walking. Through Richard’s encouragement and positivity I have gained further knowledge about not only my posture but about the body as a whole. Richard’s deep… Continue Reading
“Despite having a good level of fitness and having practiced Yoga for over 20 years I have experienced intermittent lower back pain for at least 25 years which has become chronic in the the last 6 years or so. I have spent thousands of pounds and as many hours having different types of treatment in… Continue Reading
“Truly Worthwhile” I found the series of 6 Alexander Technique sessions very useful, especially in terms of alleviating pain. My teacher (Richard Marsden) was supportive, clear and very helpful. A truly worthwhile use of my time and money! (university lecturer) Continue Reading
“I now have less pain” The Alexander Technique has revitalised my life. I walk as if walking on air. I am able to go up and down stairs with ease without my troublesome knee giving in like it used to. By relearning activities like sitting, squatting, bending and standing at my full height. I now… Continue Reading
“My body seemed more powerful and relaxed” After only a couple of lessons with Richard, I found my gym work so much more enjoyable as my body seemed more powerful and relaxed. (fireman) Continue Reading
“After the second lesson… my body felt light as a feather when I left – so much tension had drained from it. Thank you.” (therapist) Continue Reading
Through the teacher helping you to gain awareness of the habitual tendencies that are putting you wrong, The Alexander Technique can help you regain your optimal operating system. This means that the patterns of pain start to weaken and diminish leading to you feeling stronger, more relaxed and clear-thinking. As upright, bipedal creatures, posture is vital to our everyday wellbeing.
Many health problems can be traced to purely bad posture and guess what? No-one ever teaches us this so quite often, we are left in the dark!
How should I stand? How should I sit? How should I bend down? How should I walk?
Walking is a good example as we all tend to walk in our own personal way. What if though, when we walk, we list to one side, or we let the weight of the upper body put unnecessary strain on the leg joints or that we compensate for injuries that may well have been in the past. Just think about it for a second, how many times do we engage in these activities every day? 50. 100. 200 etc.
Do you think your body might eventually complain? It’s common sense, so we’re going back to the example of ‘bashing your head against a brick wall’. No other discipline available addresses this vital aspect of your life. If you go to see a professional who manipulates you, prescribes remedial exercises etc. you may get welcome, short term relief but you’re not addressing the source of the problem which will most likely be, your habitual tendencies.
Faulty posture and movement patterns can cause patterns of excess tension in your body which can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms, and they can interfere with your ability to perform many activities. It's not surprising that most people come to the Alexander Technique because they are in chronic pain
Also, performers who want to improve the quality of their singing, playing, acting, or dancing come to The Alexander Technique to ensure that they are recruiting that optimal operating system. With gentle hands-on guidance and verbal explanations, I will help you find ease and balance within yourself, relearning simple moments and everyday activities, such as sitting, standing, walking, or bending.
