About Me

My body had become a vessel of pain so I disconnected from it and consequently myself. Through learning The Alexander Technique, I discovered a way to reconnect to myself which created a path of self discovery and healing.

At The Alexander Technique Furness, I strongly believe in helping you improve the quality of your life, applying over 20 years experience as an Alexander Technique teacher.
The Technique is full of valuable common-sense information that, with practice and guidance, can really help you transform your life.

And while The Alexander Technique has a multitude of long-term benefits, improvement can begin right from the start, as our client Helen testifies below – read more testimonials here:

“My first visit with Richard felt like revelation. After almost giving up hope of ever finding a cure/reason for my back pain, four lessons in and I’m confident for the first time in years that it’s possible I will be pain free again.”

- Helen from Ulverston

My Story

After spending his formative years in the Army, including active service in the Falklands War in 1982, Richard then spent ten years working in corporate life. Towards the end of that period, Richard became very ill with chronic back pain and struggled with the mental health challenges long term acute pain can bring.

After seeking both traditional and complementary therapies for relief, only when starting his own Alexander Technique journey did real, meaningful changes begin to develop. Unlearning many of the habits that were perpetuating and exacerbating his pain, Richard's re-education revolutionised his life to such an extent that, in 2002, he completed his three-year full-time training to become a qualified Alexander Technique teacher. He has been teaching ever since, helping others find their own 'light bulb' moments and take control of their healing journey.

After teaching from a clinic in Preston since 2003, Richard now teaches exclusively in the Furness area primarily from his purpose-built studio at home in Barrow. He is married to Wendy and they both love to walk on the Lakeland Fells and the lovely beaches nearby.

Richard Marsden M.S.T.A.T is a fully qualified Alexander Technique teacher. He successfully completed the three year full-time course with Cumbria Alexander Training at The Fellside Centre in Kendal and qualified in December 2002. As a teaching member of The Society of Teachers of The Alexander Technique he is fully ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’ (D.B.S) checked. Richard also qualified as an Institute of Learning and Management (I.L.M ) Life Coach in 2018.
