THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AND GOLF – A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE AND GOLF – A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

If you play golf and want to improve to get more enjoyment from the game, learning The Alexander Technique can really help. For a start, one benefit of the technique is that you learn to release excess tension in the body. In my experience, the number one enemy in golf is excess tension which leads to steering the ball in a poor quality shot rather than swinging freely through it and those short putts that should really have gone in.

Modern golf instruction on the ever so important mental side of the game reads like an Alexander Technique guidance manual. Examples include: effective breathing, pausing to take in the surroundings, being present in the moment as you execute your shot, not allowing your mind to be distracted by irrelevant stimuli; the list goes on ……

Learning these things can make all the difference to your game. If you’re like me and are not as athletic as you once were in your youth, then learning these principles is the smart way to lower your score rather than aimlessly bashing balls down a range. Imagine how much easier the mental side of the game would be if you were practising the relevant information to help you in your everyday life away from the golf course. It is often quoted that golf is a great metaphor for life and this rings true with me. Imagine how much more effective the mental side of your game would be if you were used to exercising the principles anyway. The flip side of the coin is how can you be ‘in the present moment’ as you’re addressing the ball when you have no concept of ‘being in the present moment’ whilst doing things during the rest of your day? That’s a very steep learning curve! Learn to do it with The Alexander Technique.

If you add to this, the physical benefits of the technique: better co-ordination and balance, stronger core and legs, more poise and grace, more flexibility; the list goes on………..then sampling an Alexander lesson is a pretty good idea. Not only may it reduce your handicap but you can find yourself leading a much better quality of life too.
